Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council Canoe Trip

In 2007 The Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council embarked on The Healing Journey; 1,200 mile canoe paddle down the Yukon River highlighting cross cultural unity, land preservation and environmental stewardship. The Healing Journey was a huge success and brought international attention to the natural stewardship of Tribes and First Nations in the Yukon River Basin. Traditional knowledge was shared and recorded in an effort to document observational wisdom and incorporate these observations with modern science throughout the basin. The first ever river profile was taken on the Yukon River during the paddle that has led to many exciting questions about this remote region of the world and given direction to future studies regarding water quality and system dynamics.

To continue the journey set before us we are encouraged to embark down the Porcupine River in July 2008. The 2008 Healing Journey will carry the message of stewardship while conducting a continuous river profile taken between Old Crow and Fort Yukon. This profile will study how the Porcupine River impacts the Yukon River and begin to paint a picture of the watershed as a whole. This profile will compliment the 2007 Yukon River profile by recording various constituents of water quality continuously throughout the paddle journey.
